Twelve current and former Amazon employees told Business Insider the company’s five-day office mandate, AI push and repeated layoffs have made work feel faster, more monitored and less secure.
AI use is now embedded in many engineering roles, several employees said, with Amazon tracking usage at team or individual level; some called it a productivity boost, while others said fear of irrelevance drove adoption.
Five-day RTO drew the sharpest split: workers with 5- to 30-minute commutes said it improved boundaries and visibility, while others cited 45- to 70-minute trips, stricter attendance tracking and fewer practical remote exceptions.
Layoffs and performance pressure ran through many accounts, from managers being flattened into individual-contributor roles to workers waking before dawn for layoff emails, landing on PIPs, or struggling for months to find new jobs.
Several employees said the combined shift is changing Amazon’s culture—toward a narrower ideal worker, less flexibility for caregivers and remote staff, and a more transactional focus on delivering impact amid constant change.
