Antonio Villaraigosa said California Democrats must take responsibility for the state’s homelessness and affordability crises rather than blame President Donald Trump.
On MSNBC, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate argued the state has the nation’s highest homelessness, gas prices, utility bills and home prices under Democratic policies, leaving many residents unable to afford rent.
The former Los Angeles mayor said his campaign is built on challenging his own party’s record and warned Democrats are losing persuadable middle-of-the-road voters as confidence in their leadership erodes.
Villaraigosa also cautioned that California’s progressive tax system depends too heavily on billionaires and other high-net-worth residents, saying further tax pressure could drive them out and worsen budget strains.
Looking ahead to the race, he predicted California’s top-two primary would still produce a Democrat-versus-Republican general election, not two Republicans advancing.
