A couple who stole £130 of fuel from a Gwynedd garage were identified after owner Judith Troughton posted van images on Facebook, then were tracked by locals to a beach where police confronted them.
Residents first spotted the pair at a pub in Porthmadog, lost them before officers arrived, then found them again the next day and watched them until police came; the couple admitted the theft and later paid.
Troughton said her station near Trawsfynydd has suffered three fuel thefts in six weeks, including another suspect under investigation and a man caught after his vehicle broke down who later returned to settle up.
BBC figures show UK fuel thefts have surged 62% from a year earlier as pump prices rise amid the Ukraine war and the US-Israel conflict with Iran, squeezing motorists and thin-margin forecourt operators.
