Lamar Alexander, 85, writes in his new memoir that Donald Trump’s Jan. 6 conduct amounted to a "high crime or misdemeanor" and says he undermined the Constitution and the peaceful transfer of power.
“The Education of a Senator” marks a sharp contrast with Alexander’s role in Trump’s first impeachment, when the influential Tennessee Republican opposed calling witnesses and argued the Ukraine pressure campaign did not justify removal.
Alexander says Trump exhorted the mob that stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, reached the Senate chamber and sought to block certification of the election.
The memoir suggests Alexander, who left the Senate weeks before Trump’s second impeachment trial, might have taken a different position had he still been in office.
