Subnautica 2 Launches in Early Access With 4-Tentacled Collector Leviathan

May 14’s early-access release of Subnautica 2 introduced the Collector Leviathan, a giant squid-like apex predator built to grab, crush and swat players and submersibles.
Unknown Worlds says the creature differs from earlier leviathans by actively hunting within a defined territory instead of simply patrolling open water, making encounters less predictable and more psychological.
A first post-launch update will add the Collector’s explorable lair, with tighter spaces and fewer escape routes designed to intensify the horror inside its home environment.
The launch arrived after a legal fight between publisher Krafton and Unknown Worlds’ founders over early-access timing, with the studio saying the delay allowed a more polished build.
That design shift could reshape early-access play by forcing players to choose between avoiding the monster’s territory or entering it for resources and story progression.
