Maura Healey and state Sen. Bruce Tarr asked the U.S. Navy this week to help recover six unrecovered crew members and onboard recording equipment from the Lily Jean, which sank Jan. 30 off Massachusetts.
More than 300 feet down and about 25 miles offshore, the wreck is believed to hold a video recorder and hard drive that could help determine why the 72-foot fishing vessel went down.
The Navy said it has received the request and is preparing a response to the governor’s office.
Only captain Accursio "Gus" Sanfilippo’s body has been recovered; the Coast Guard suspended its search Jan. 31 after covering 1,047 square miles over 24 hours and finding debris and an empty life raft.
The NTSB and Coast Guard are still investigating the disaster, but the NTSB does not conduct recoveries, leaving the state seeking Navy help for both evidence and remains.
Can the Navy's deep-sea robots recover the vessel's 'black box' and finally reveal why the Lily Jean sank?
Will a perilous recovery mission bring home the lost crew and provide answers their grieving families desperately seek?
