Jay Bilas said the NCAA’s move to expand the men’s and women’s tournaments to 76 teams was unnecessary, arguing there was little demand to add more at-large bids.
Eight extra at-large spots would create 12 play-in games between 24 teams over the first two days, a format Bilas said could confuse casual fans and feels largely inconsequential.
Bilas said the expansion could let .500 major-conference teams into the field and slightly devalue the regular season, echoing concerns raised by UConn coach Danny Hurley.
He still downplayed the overall impact, saying most added teams would likely lose by the first weekend and noting the clearest rationale for expansion is financial—schools can earn NCAA tournament units from play-in wins.
