Eight people were injured in central Modena after a car mounted the sidewalk, hit pedestrians and crashed into a shop window; police arrested the driver and said there was no further danger.
Mayor Massimo Mezzetti said four victims were in serious condition and described the act as deliberate, adding that the driver then got out and brandished a knife.
One man who tried to stop the driver suffered minor injuries, while a witness told RaiNews24 the motorist appeared intoxicated, though authorities have not confirmed alcohol or drug use.
