Danish divers identified the dead humpback whale off Anholt island as "Timmy" after retrieving a tracking device still attached to its back.
Saturday's calmer conditions let a local Danish Nature Agency employee locate the device, after an initial examination on Friday failed because of the carcass's position in the water.
The whale had spent more than a month stranded off Germany's Baltic coast, where rescuers attached the tracker and later towed the badly ailing animal away.
German officials said Timmy had only a slim chance of survival; Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's environment minister again defended the disputed rescue attempt as giving the whale a last chance.
