A meta-analysis of 25 brain-scan studies found people with anxiety disorders had about 8% lower brain choline than controls, with the clearest deficit in the prefrontal cortex.
The review covered 370 anxiety patients and 342 people without anxiety, using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy to compare neurometabolites across diagnoses.
Researchers said the finding is the first clear chemical brain pattern tied to anxiety and may reflect higher choline demand under chronic fight-or-flight activity; reduced cortical NAA also appeared after some exclusions.
UC Davis cautioned that the result does not prove low dietary choline causes anxiety or that supplements treat it, though many Americans already fall short of recommended intake.
The study points to nutrition as a possible piece of anxiety care, but controlled trials are still needed to test whether raising choline can change brain chemistry or symptoms.
