At least 42 children were taken in Mussa, Borno, after armed terrorists raided a primary school, a junior secondary school and nearby homes on Friday.
School authorities' figures cited by Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume put the toll at 28 primary pupils, four GDSS students and 10 children seized from their residences.
Ndume said the attack struck during early morning lessons, deepening panic among parents and guardians, and described the abduction as barbaric and disheartening.
He urged security agencies, especially the Nigerian Army, to intensify rescue efforts, while also condoling families affected by recent killings in Chibok and other southern Borno attacks.
With billions spent on security, why can't Nigeria protect its schools from armed militants?
As a top IS leader is killed, why are Nigerian children still so vulnerable to abduction?
