Damiani Books has released Jon McCormack’s monograph “Patterns: Art of the Natural World,” a project built from images that shifted his focus from sweeping landscapes to small natural details.
A 2020 pandemic routine of nightly walks on a Pacific Grove, California, beach led McCormack to notice fleeting patterns shaped by tide, light and wind, changing how he photographed nature.
About two-thirds of the book’s images were made during and after the pandemic, while the rest came from a 40-year archive that he revisited and recognized as pattern-driven work.
The book ranges from Arctic ice caves and British Columbia waters to a hibiscus in a suburban garden, underscoring McCormack’s message that nature is close at hand and worth protecting.
Could a photographer's colorblindness be the secret to revealing nature's most intricate patterns?
