A 38-year-old man died after a 13ft great white bit him just before 10:00 local time at Horseshoe Reef, off Rottnest Island near Perth, police said.
Aerial footage showed him rushed ashore by boat to Geordie Bay jetty, where paramedics and police performed CPR but could not revive him.
Western Australia's Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development said it received a report confirming a great white and urged extra caution in nearby waters.
The death is Western Australia's first fatal shark incident since March 2025; Australia has recorded nearly 1,300 shark attacks since 1791, more than 260 of them fatal.
