Two men, 35 and 46, were killed after a northbound Mercedes jumped the curb on Amsterdam Avenue around 6 p.m. and hit five men near West 109th Street.
Police took the 61-year-old driver into custody, and sources said he appeared intoxicated after the car first struck parked vehicles, including a Volkswagen and a minivan.
Three other men remained in critical condition, while cellphone video showed bystanders trying to lift the vehicle off one victim pinned underneath.
Neighbors said most of the victims had been standing or sitting outside a barbershop on the tight-knit Upper West Side block; the investigation is ongoing.
