Matthew B. Roberts said the Outlander finale was deliberately left open to interpretation, refusing to confirm whether Jamie and Claire's last scene is survival or an afterlife reunion.
In the episode, Jamie is shot and appears to die at the Battle of Kings Mountain, but he and Claire both gasp back to life after she stays beside him and channels her "magical powers."
Roberts said Jamie still chose to fight despite a prophecy of his death because he wanted to protect his family and land, while Claire was always going to follow him into battle.
The finale also closed with an after-credits scene featuring author Diana Gabaldon and longtime crew members, a tribute marking the end of the Starz drama's 8-season, 12-year run.
Roberts said there were still more stories to tell and, when asked about a future film, answered only: "Maybe."
