Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan said goodbye to “Outlander” after its eight-season finale, describing the ending as emotional but fitting because Claire and Jamie ultimately remain together.
The finale’s key scene has Jamie die in Claire’s arms before both appear to revive in the closing moments, while Heughan said he pushed to bookend the series with Jamie’s ghost from the pilot.
Balfe said filming Jamie’s death was her toughest moment and credited Heughan with helping her through it; Heughan called the mountain shoot physically difficult and said the pair’s off-screen support was mutual.
The ending closes the TV series before Diana Gabaldon finishes the 10-book saga, with Heughan saying the show shares similarities with her planned ending even though more story remains in the novels.
Balfe also marked a new milestone by directing the post-credits scene featuring Gabaldon, as both stars said the cast and crew’s bond will be what they remember most after more than a decade on the show.
