North Carolina NAACP Backs Charlotte Leader's Criticism of White Interim Mayor Bid Before June 30 Exit

Deborah Maxwell, president of the North Carolina NAACP, defended Charlotte-Mecklenburg branch leader Corine Mack after Mack said it was "seriously disturbing" for White politicians to lobby for Charlotte's interim mayor post.
Mack's comments followed Mayor Vi Lyles' announcement that she will resign on June 30, opening a City Council vote on a temporary successor and prompting debate over whether a White replacement would weaken Black representation.
Maxwell said the NAACP judges leaders by actions, policies and results rather than identity, but backed the local branch's role in challenging decisions it believes exclude Black communities from meaningful participation.
The dispute lands as Charlotte politicians jockey for the interim job and as Lyles remains under scrutiny after the fatal stabbing of Ukrainian national Iryna Zarutska put the city on the national stage.
After a Black mayor's historic tenure, is prioritizing a successor's race about ensuring equity or creating a new form of bias?
