Court testimony said 18-year-old Henry Nowak bled to death in Southampton after officers arrested and handcuffed him at the scene rather than alleged attacker Vickrum Digwa, 23.
Prosecutors said Digwa claimed he had been racially abused and attacked by a drunken man, but Nowak’s phone recording and alcohol level challenged that account.
A post-mortem found four stab wounds, including one that cut Nowak’s lung; prosecutors said Digwa used an eight-inch shastar blade and aggressively pursued him after the attack.
Digwa has pleaded not guilty to murder, while his mother, Kiran Kaur, 53, has pleaded not guilty to assisting an offender by allegedly removing the knife.
The case has intensified scrutiny of Hampshire police conduct, with campaign group Turning Point UK calling for the officers involved to be fired and to apologize.
