Trump said 440 kilograms of 60% enriched uranium in Iran is being watched around the clock by nine cameras and that “nobody’s getting close to it.”
Nine cameras and 24/7 surveillance undercut the urgency of the material as an immediate wartime threat, even as Trump said he would still prefer it be removed from the country.
Trump added that taking the uranium out would be “more for public relations than it is for anything else,” casting his earlier war justification in a sharply different light.
The remarks, made while he was in China, raise fresh questions about the rationale presented for military action against Iran and how much of it was aimed at public messaging.
