Eclectic Pictures and Hollywood Ventures Group said at Cannes they are now packaging Expendabelles and actively assembling creative talent for the long-stalled Expendables spin-off.
The revived film is being pitched as a late-1990s Y2K-era origin story introducing a new team of elite female operatives, with producers also meeting distributors and financiers.
Lionsgate is backing the project after acquiring Expendables rights late last year, giving new momentum to a concept first developed more than a decade ago and abandoned in earlier iterations.
The reboot attempt comes as Hollywood still struggles to turn female-led action ensembles into hits: The 355 grossed $27 million worldwide, while 2019's Charlie's Angels made $73 million globally.
