Garrett’s breakup with Hannah was shifted from the book’s financial-blackmail plot to his fear of becoming his abusive father, after his violent outburst on the ice against Hannah’s attacker.
NIL rules drove part of that rewrite: showrunner Louisa Levy said a star athlete like Garrett could now earn his own money through brand deals, weakening the original stakes around his father cutting him off.
Season 2 will keep Hannah and Garrett central rather than sidelining them as a settled couple, with the writers planning to test their relationship through schedules and other real-world pressures.
Episode 8 also planted the next conflict by introducing Hunter Davenport as Allie’s mystery hookup and a new hockey recruit tied to Dean, while the showrunners declined to confirm whether Dean and Allie’s book romance is being moved up.
Production on Season 2 starts next month, with each season covering 1 semester; Levy said the team is focused on adapting the first 4 books, though Justin actor Josh Heuston will not return.
