Michael Kim said he was nearly late for his 8:46 a.m. PGA Championship start at Aronimink, realizing only at 8:43 that he needed to move quickly to the first tee.
Kim said the confusion came from holes 1 and 10 sharing one tee box, with groups going off in 5-minute intervals instead of the 10-minute gaps he is used to on tour.
Garrick Higgo was not as fortunate: he took a 2-stroke penalty for arriving late, then recovered with a 1-under 69 in Thursday’s opening round.
Kim avoided the penalty but opened with a 3-over 73, citing a double bogey on 3 and back-to-back 3-putts on 15 and 16 that left him tied for 93rd.
At the top of the leaderboard, 7 players opened at 3-under, including world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Min Woo Lee and Martin Kaymer.
