May 22 will bring Star Wars back to theaters for the first time in nearly seven years with The Mandalorian and Grogu, the franchise’s latest attempt to restart its film run.
Jon Favreau said Lucasfilm likely chose the project because Grogu and the Mandalorian already reach beyond core fans, with “Baby Yoda” becoming a broad pop-culture draw after helping launch Disney+.
Favreau argued those characters can still serve as an entry point for newcomers because the series was built to work even for viewers with no prior Star Wars knowledge.
That theatrical bet comes after The Mandalorian lost some of its early simplicity and broader appeal, as later seasons became more tied to wider franchise lore and season three drew a more divisive response.
The film now tests whether Grogu’s once-ubiquitous popularity can still pull both casual audiences and new viewers back to the big screen.
With Star Wars' future on the line, can its most popular streaming duo conquer the global box office?
Under new leadership, will this film be a fresh start or repeat the TV show's divisive storytelling?
