100 episodes in, Outlander reached its latest milestone this week as Caitríona Balfe reflected on finishing the eighth and final season after filming wrapped in fall 2024.
Season 8 centers on Claire and Jamie back at Fraser’s Ridge in 1789, with Frank Randall’s book warning Jamie could die at the Battle of Kings Mountain and destabilizing both characters.
Episode 9 also reveals Claire’s long-running voiceover as her written record of the Fraser story, while another 20th-century time traveler, Captain Richardson, tries to alter Revolutionary War history before Lord John kills him.
Balfe said the production stretched across 12 years, delayed by COVID and the 2023 writers and actors strikes; the show hired its first intimacy coordinator only in season 6.
The actress, who also directed season 8’s second episode, said the cast filmed multiple endings and that her final scene with Sam Heughan was a 7-page exchange she struggled to complete emotionally.
