Season 28 will keep Olivia Benson and Fin Tutuola in place, with showrunner Michele Fazekas saying Benson has recommitted to the job and Fin "will never retire."
The finale pushed Benson to question her future after a procedural error freed a known kidnapper, while Chief Tynan tried to force her out over a case that left Detective Griffin hospitalized.
A recording flipped that power struggle: Benson revealed evidence of Tynan discussing a gun planted on a suspect in the 1990s, and Fazekas said that conflict is handled "for the moment."
Griffin will also stay, with Fazekas saying no cast changes are planned and the writers want to keep developing his character after he survived the shooting.
With the writers' room opening next week, Fazekas said Season 28 will move past retirement as its central theme and look for a new arc ahead of the fall 2026 premiere.
