A 24-year-old woman, Elizabeth Dankert of Andover, died after a twin-engine recreational boat slammed into the Runway 4R pier at Boston Logan around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday; three other people were hospitalized and are expected to survive.
Freedom Boat Club said the vessel had been taken without authorization and was being operated after the club had closed, a key detail as state police and the Suffolk District Attorney's Office investigate the cause and possible charges.
Prosecutors said Dankert and two 23-year-old female friends had been in the Seaport before boarding a boat owned by a 40-year-old man; the impact threw passengers onto shoreline rocks, prompting difficult nighttime water rescues.
Massport said airport service was not disrupted, though Runway 4R was temporarily closed for the emergency response and investigation before reopening.
Dankert, a 2024 Union College graduate who worked at PTC in Boston's Seaport, was remembered by her family, college and employer as a standout student-athlete and colleague.
