May 19-20 will bring Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to Andong, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung’s hometown region, for talks aimed at reinforcing bilateral ties.
Lee invited Takaichi after traveling earlier this year to Nara, Takaichi’s political base, in what Seoul called the first exchange of visits between the hometown regions of South Korean and Japanese leaders.
Andong, in North Gyeongsang Province, extends that highly personalized diplomacy as both governments navigate shifting US-China dynamics and rising uncertainty over regional security.
