A Rs 3-per-litre increase in petrol and diesel drew a forceful BJP defence, with the party saying India’s fuel prices rose just 3.2% for petrol and 3.4% for diesel between Feb. 23 and May 15.
BJP’s Amit Malviya said state-run oil marketers had largely held prices steady despite imported crude jumping from about $69 a barrel in February to $113-$114 after the West Asia war and Strait of Hormuz closure.
Public-sector retailers had absorbed heavy under-recoveries instead of passing costs through immediately, he said, even as daily losses neared Rs 1,000 crore before the first fuel-price increase in more than four years.
Congress called the move a post-election burden on consumers, arguing the government had benefited when crude fell earlier and is now making the public absorb a predictable oil shock.
