Gemini’s overlay feels more polished because Google has updated that surface faster than the full app. The new Android overlay now supports Dynamic Color, part of Google’s Material You-style theming, so its text field, chips and menu sheets pick up wallpaper-based tints, especially in dark mode. The main Gemini chat app still does not support that theming, leaving it with a flatter, older-looking interface. That mismatch appears to be the result of a phased rollout rather than a design reversal. Google pushed the overlay changes through the Google app, reaching beta users in version 17.28 and stable users by June 6, while the separate full-screen Gemini experience has not yet been brought into the same visual system. In practice, users now move between a tinted, modern overlay and an un-themed main app, which makes the gap more obvious. The contrast matters because AI products depend heavily on trust and ease of use. Design experts have long argued that adoption often fails because of friction and inconsistency, not because the model itself is weak. Google’s other overlay change—moving “Screen content” into the main carousel with Photos, Camera, Files, Drive and Notebooks—shows the same effort to reduce friction at the point of use. So the clash is less about conflicting design goals than about uneven implementation: Google has modernized the quick-access Gemini overlay, but the main Android app has not yet caught up visually.

Google has begun pushing Dynamic Color for the Gemini overlay to stable Android users on Google app version 17.28, extending a redesign first seen in beta.
The update is most visible in dark mode, where the text field and chips are no longer gray; in light mode, the bigger change appears in the tinted plus-menu sheet and themed carousel.
Google also moved the "Screen content" capture tool into the main carousel beside Photos, Camera, Files, Drive and Notebooks, replacing its earlier spot in the tools list.
That "Screen content" change was already widely available in stable version 17.26, while the full Gemini chat experience still lacks Dynamic Color despite the overlay refresh following I/O 2026.
