An interim heavyweight title would be historic for Alex Pereira, but for many observers it would not fully settle the legacy question; a unification win would carry far more weight. If Pereira beats Ciryl Gane, he would become the first fighter in UFC history to win titles in three weight classes, even if the heavyweight belt is interim. That alone is a rare and meaningful achievement, and it would strengthen his case as one of the sport’s most accomplished champions. Dana White and Michael Bisping have argued that this milestone, by itself, is enough to elevate Pereira into the GOAT conversation. But the hesitation comes from what an interim belt represents. It is an officially recognized title, yet it is still a provisional championship created while the undisputed champion is unavailable. In MMA, interim titles are usually seen as incomplete until the holder either unifies the belt or is promoted to undisputed champion. That is why Laura Sanko and Matt Brown argue the achievement, while major, would still fall short of definitively surpassing Jon Jones’s deeper résumé and long-term dominance.
