Pokémon GO Runs 10-Hour Showcase Tuesday on June 9, Scoring Entries by Biggest Size

Q: Pokémon GO's new scoring adds an XXL bonus. How does this secret factor change what makes a winning Pokémon?

The XXL bonus makes an XXL Pokémon the favorite in most Pokémon GO Showcases, because it adds a large fixed boost — about 178 points — on top of the normal size formula. That matters because Showcase scoring already leans heavily toward size: height accounts for roughly 80% of the score, with weight and IVs also included. The new hidden XXL bonus means a Pokémon no longer just needs to be relatively large for its species; being tagged XXL can outweigh small differences in height, weight or IVs and push it past standard or even XL rivals. In practical terms, the winning strategy in most type-based Showcases, including this week’s Dark-, Ghost- and Psychic-type contests, is to prioritize XXL entries. The effect is even stronger for some regional forms. An XXL Alolan Exeggutor, for example, can score exceptionally well because its towering form is compared against the base species’ normal size, producing an outsized advantage. The main exception is the buddy-themed categories such as “Good Buddy or higher” and “Great Buddy or higher.” Those contests are understood to favor absolute physical size rather than relative size against a species average. In those Showcases, the best pick is simply the biggest Pokémon you own, such as naturally enormous species, rather than chasing the XXL label alone. So the change is straightforward: in most Showcases, “largest for the species” is no longer enough — “XXL” is now the key trait that most often decides the winner.

June 9’s Showcase Tuesday runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time, with PokéStop Showcase entries ranked by biggest size rather than a species-specific theme.
Height drives 80% of each score, while weight and IVs also count toward the total points awarded to submitted Pokémon.
Five categories are active this week: Good Buddy or higher, Great Buddy or higher, Dark-type, Ghost-type and Psychic-type Pokémon.
Players can enter up to five PokéStop Showcases during the event, up from three earlier in the Season of Memories in Motion.
Niantic already shifted Showcase Tuesday from an all-day window to 10 a.m.-8 p.m. after player feedback, and the event is set to return on June 16.
