In a tournament that often comes down to surviving multiple elimination games, that depth matters. At the same time, the 2026 bracket is evidence that the door is not closed. Only five of the top 16 national seeds reached Omaha, and the top overall seeds UCLA and Georgia Tech were knocked out in regionals again. Troy, a Sun Belt team that was just 32-29 on Selection Monday, beat Florida in Gainesville and reached its first College World Series. West Virginia is also a first-time Omaha team. That kind of volatility is built into college baseball more than in many other sports because hot pitching, timely power and a few swing games can flip a bracket quickly. History supports that possibility, even if it is rare. Fresno State won the 2008 national title as a No. 4 regional seed, and Coastal Carolina won it all in 2016 outside the power structure. So a Cinderella title run is still possible in modern college baseball. The better way to frame it is this: Cinderella can still reach Omaha, and occasionally can win it all, but doing so now usually requires beating several better-funded programs in succession. That makes the path real, not likely.
