A previously unpublished letter written shortly after Diana's 1981 wedding says she "hate[d] London" while recalling a "blissful honeymoon" with "endless sun" and "calm seas."
The note, sent from Balmoral Castle to schoolfriend Katherine Hanbury after a 12-day Royal Yacht Britannia cruise, also shows Diana sounding upbeat about married life, calling it "wonderful being married."
The revelation contrasts with Diana's long residence at Kensington Palace, where she lived with Charles after the wedding and kept Apartments 8 and 9 as her base even after their 1992 separation.
That letter is part of a collection Hanbury will sell at a Gorringe's auction in Lewes in July, alongside school-era photographs including one featuring Tilda Swinton.
This letter revealed Diana's secret feelings. What other royal truths are waiting to be sold?
She privately hated London, so why did Diana make Kensington Palace her lifelong home?
