17 laps into the Indianapolis 500, Katherine Legge hit the inside wall and saw her bid to become the first woman to complete the 1,100-mile Double end almost immediately.
Ryan Hunter-Reay spun in Turn 2, and Legge said she tried to dive low through smoke while saving fuel but could not avoid the crash; both drivers were checked and released.
Legge had started 26th and arrived with little preparation after her teams announced the attempt only last week, following a run of setbacks that included travel delays, radio trouble and a rainout in Charlotte qualifying.
Charlotte still awaits: Legge plans to fly to North Carolina for the Coca-Cola 600, where she is set to start 37th as rain chances rise later Sunday.
Only Tony Stewart, in 2001, has completed the Double, while the past three attempts have also been disrupted by crashes or weather.
