Members of the public found suspected human skeletal remains in woodland near the A617 Rainworth Bypass on Saturday, prompting Nottinghamshire Police to open an investigation.
Detective Inspector Matt Scott said inquiries so far indicate the remains are believed to be those of one person, but the identity has not yet been established.
Forensic teams were still at the scene on Sunday, with a police cordon in place and one eastbound lane of the bypass coned off.
Police said the case poses no risk to public safety, but officers will maintain the scene for days and increase their presence through the Bank Holiday weekend and into next week.
Investigators said they are keeping an open mind as they work to determine how the body came to be there and the circumstances of the death.
