Clark County jail records show New Chicago Police Chief Earl Mayo is being held on a fugitive-from-justice charge after his May 22 arrest on I-70 eastbound near U.S. 40.
Lake County, Indiana, court filings say Mayo is wanted on four charges in his home state: theft, obstruction of justice, unlawful possession of an anabolic steroid, and official misconduct.
Ohio State Highway Patrol made the arrest, according to the Clark County Sheriff's Office, while authorities in Indiana have also searched Mayo's Merrillville home.
The case has already disrupted local policing in New Chicago, where Mayo was placed on administrative leave and the Lake County Sheriff's Department temporarily took over police jurisdiction.
