Israel Strikes 12-Plus Lebanon Villages, Destroying Civil Defence Site as 11 Died in Prior Raid

Israeli strikes hit multiple sites in southern and eastern Lebanon on Sunday, with Lebanon’s civil defence saying an overnight raid destroyed its regional facility in Nabatieh.
More than a dozen villages in the south and Bekaa valley were later covered by Israeli evacuation warnings, while smoke was seen over Nabatieh and Zawtar al-Sharqiyah and some raids caused casualties.
The attacks came a day after a strike on Sir al-Gharbiyeh killed 11 people — including six women and a child — despite a ceasefire that began on April 17 and was recently extended.
Israel says it is targeting Hezbollah, which has kept up attacks as well, including rockets fired Sunday at Israeli troops operating inside a 10-km "yellow line" in southern Lebanon.
The escalation jars with US-backed Israel-Lebanon talks and Hezbollah-linked claims that any US-Iran deal to end the regional war must also stop the fighting in Lebanon.
With daily strikes despite a truce, is the Lebanon conflict a roadblock or a bargaining chip for regional peace?
As a US-Iran peace deal nears, who can actually enforce a ceasefire on the ground between Israel and Hezbollah?
2026 Lebanon Conflict: Civilian Toll, Mass Displacement, and the Impact of the "Yellow Line"
Overview
In May 2026, hostilities sharply escalated in southern Lebanon as Israeli airstrikes targeted villages and civilian areas, including a deadly strike on the town of Toura that killed one person and injured two. This attack directly harmed civilians and damaged infrastructure, while daily exchanges of fire continued between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, who launched rockets and drones in response. The persistent violence has created a volatile environment, fueling a cycle of attacks that deeply affects both sides of the border and leaves local communities facing immediate danger, destruction, and growing humanitarian needs.
