Prospect Lithium Exports Africa’s First Lithium Sulphate From $400 Million Zimbabwe Mine

Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe shipped the continent’s first lithium sulphate consignment last month from its $400 million Arcadia mine near Harare, marking Africa’s first production of the lithium salt.
The export follows Zimbabwe’s decision to bring forward a ban on raw mineral exports to February, a move aimed at curbing smuggling and forcing more value-added processing at home.
Arcadia can produce 50,000 metric tonnes of lithium sulphate a year, giving Zimbabwe an intermediate battery-material product that can be refined further into lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonate.
Prospect Lithium, a unit of China’s Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, said the shipment signals Zimbabwe’s push to move beyond the long-running “digging and shipping” model into the global battery supply chain.
