Egypt has begun its first nationwide aerial mining survey in 42 years, aiming to build a modern geological database that officials say could speed mineral discoveries and draw foreign investors.
Six regions — including the Eastern Desert, Sinai and parts of the Western Desert — will be mapped with specialised aircraft and geophysical systems to cut exploration costs and reduce uncertainty.
Spanish firm X-Calibre will lead the work with Egypt’s Nuclear Materials Authority and Drone Tech; the company says it has completed more than 1,400 aerial surveys worldwide.
The project supports Egypt’s broader mining-sector overhaul, including turning its Mineral Wealth and Mining Industries Authority into an independent economic entity as African countries compete for critical-mineral investment.

Overview
Egypt is set to launch its first nationwide aerial mining survey in June 2026, following Cabinet approval. This major initiative aims to modernize the country’s geological data and unlock vast mineral potential, addressing the critical need for updated information. By doing so, Egypt hopes to boost the mining sector’s contribution to national GDP from less than 1% to about 6% by 2030. The government is committed to making mining a cornerstone of future economic growth, with strong coordination among the Mineral Resources and Mining Industries Authority to ensure the optimal use of the nation’s mineral wealth.
