Lauren Kanarek’s family says Netflix’s 2026 “Untold” documentary and CBS’s 2022 “48 Hours” episode skewed the 2019 shooting toward Michael Barisone, portraying the trainer as a victim rather than Kanarek.
Jonathan Kanarek and family lawyer Steven Beer said that framing fueled hate mail, social-media abuse and ostracism in the equestrian community after the programs aired.
Beer said the family sought an advance screener from Netflix and producer Propagate to help Kanarek manage anxiety, but was refused, reinforcing fears that her account would be minimized.
Barisone shot Kanarek twice in the chest at his New Jersey farm in 2019; a jury found him not guilty by reason of insanity in 2022, and he was released from psychiatric confinement in 2023.
Kanarek, who suffered a damaged lung and multiple surgeries, now wants the case to push broader discussion about protecting women from intimidation and abuse by powerful figures in sports.
Is Netflix's hit documentary a fair look at a mental breakdown, or a new form of harassment against the victim?
A jury found him insane, but a sports body banned him for life. Which verdict truly delivers justice in this case?
