Tijuana will host Iran’s 2026 World Cup base camp after FIFA approved moving the team from Tucson, Arizona, Iran federation president Mehdi Taj said Saturday.
The switch was driven by Middle East war uncertainty, security concerns and possible U.S. visa problems; Iran said entering through Mexico should ease travel and could allow Iran Air flights.
Group G logistics also favored the move: Iran opens against New Zealand on June 15 at SoFi Stadium, plays Belgium there on June 21, then faces Egypt in Seattle on June 26.
The federation said Tijuana offers training facilities, a gym and a private restaurant while keeping the team close to the Los Angeles area during its first two matches.
The World Cup opens June 11 across the United States, Canada and Mexico, with Iran seeking a first trip beyond the group stage in its fourth straight appearance.
