Royal Navy Readies RFA Lyme Bay for 700-Ship Hormuz Mission as Iran Deal Remains Unclear

RFA Lyme Bay is being loaded in Gibraltar with ammunition and sonar-equipped mine-hunting drones for a possible British-French mission to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
At least 6,000 ships have been blocked since Iran effectively closed the waterway after the Feb. 28 war began, and Britain says clearing an initial transit lane could let about 700 ships leave.
Cmdr. Gemma Britton said the ship will act as a mother ship for autonomous systems that map seabed threats and can destroy mines remotely, reducing the need to send sailors into minefields.
The deployment is still conditional: Armed Forces Minister Al Carns said the operation would begin only after hostilities end, while Trump said an Iran deal is largely negotiated but not finalized.
Britain's preparations also answer U.S. pressure on allies to secure the strait themselves, with insurers demanding certainty before commercial traffic resumes and full clearance potentially taking months or years.

How will the global economy cope if clearing the world’s most vital oil chokepoint takes months or years?
Strait of Hormuz Crisis 2026: Multinational Mine Clearance, Economic Shock, and the Battle to Restore Global Shipping
Overview
As of May 23, 2026, the international community is urgently preparing a major multinational mine-clearing mission in the Strait of Hormuz, led by the Royal Navy’s RFA Lyme Bay. This action responds to ongoing disruptions in the Strait, a vital shipping lane, which have caused severe global economic impacts. The mission aims to secure commercial shipping and reduce the burden of conflict on populations worldwide. The United Kingdom has pledged significant military resources, including advanced ships and equipment, to help restore freedom of navigation and stabilize the global economy.
