Fifteen years after the May 22, 2011 tornado, Joplin is commemorating the deadliest U.S. tornado in the modern record era, with Robert Ray returning to the city he covered in the storm’s aftermath.
The EF-5 twister carved a 22-mile path with winds above 200 mph, damaged about 7,500 homes, destroyed roughly a quarter of the city and injured more than 1,000 people.
Landmarks including St. John’s Regional Medical Center, Joplin High School and Greenbrier Nursing Home were devastated, while residents, volunteers and government agencies improvised a massive emergency response.
Much of Joplin has since been rebuilt, though survivors say the scars remain, and memorial sites now anchor the city’s remembrance of the disaster.
The tornado also reshaped U.S. warning practices, helping drive stronger tornado alert language, impact-based warnings and wireless emergency alerts to cell phones.
